Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Aït Benhaddou → Dades Valley
We'll pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech and begin our scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). Our journey includes a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, a spectacular fortified village that has served as a backdrop for many Hollywood films. After exploring the kasbah, we continue through Ouarzazate, the "Valley of Roses," and the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" to the stunning Dades Valley, where we will spend the night in a local hotel or riad.
Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga (Camel Trek & Desert Camp)
After breakfast, we'll admire the unique "monkey fingers" rock formations of the Dades Valley before heading to the nearby Todra Gorges, a massive canyon with high, vertical rock cliffs that attract climbers from around the world. You'll have time for a short walk through the canyon. In the afternoon, we travel through Erfoud and Rissani to arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. Here, you'll trade your vehicle for a camel and begin your trek into the heart of the desert. Enjoy a spectacular sunset over the dunes before arriving at our desert camp for a traditional dinner and a night under the stars.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert Exploration → Rissani → Agdz
Wake up early to witness a spectacular desert sunrise. After breakfast at the camp, you'll ride your camel back to Merzouga. Today we explore more of the desert region, visiting the traditional market in Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region. We will then begin our journey west, passing through different desert landscapes and Berber villages like Alnif and Tazzarine. Our route takes us towards the beautiful Draa Valley, and we'll spend the night in the tranquil oasis town of Agdz.
Day 4: Agdz → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakech
After breakfast, we drive through the Draa Valley with its vast palm groves and ancient kasbahs. We'll continue to Ouarzazate, with an option to visit the Taourirt Kasbah or the famous Atlas Film Studios. FAQ
What is the main difference between the 3-day and 4-day tours? The 4-day tour breaks up the long return journey from the desert to Marrakech with an overnight stay in Agdz (in the Draa Valley). This makes the driving days more manageable and allows for a more relaxed exploration of the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate.
What should I pack for the desert? We recommend packing light for the overnight desert stay. Essential items include a scarf (for sun and dust), sunglasses, sunscreen, a warm jacket for the evening, a camera, and any personal medications. A small backpack is ideal for the camel trek.
Is it possible to have a private bathroom at the desert camp? Yes, we offer both standard and luxury camp options. The luxury camps include private, en-suite bathrooms with hot showers. Please let us know your preference when booking so we can provide a quote.
